Being a teacher……..
Being a teacher, I am often asked about some tips and tricks on how to teach young learners. It is not a surprise as many professionals know that this age group is not as easy to work with as it looks. Personally, it is crucial to understand the core reason for kids to learn another language.
Surprisingly, it is easy to motivate kids for learning.
Surprisingly, it is easy to motivate kids for learning. All of them have cartoon heroes. Thanks to modern technologies it is quite easy to find a cartoon in your target language and watch it together with kids. They usually have a vivid imagination. So, if they struggle in understanding something because of the language, thanks to their imagination, kids can quite easily follow the plot. Teaching my little nephew, I have also noticed that he likes to re-create his favorite scenes from cartoons, why not do that in the target language as well.
Fairy tale-telling is another great time spending activity…..
Fairy tale-telling is another great time spending activity, that kids are good at. Usually, they can hardly notice if some words are substituted with words in the target language. It is possible to introduce new words using fairy tale characters, pictures, and soft toys. If you let kids write new words in the target language on the walls, I am sure they will be engaged in the project. In addition, kids can draw the connection between words and pictures. When they become a bit older, they will easily connect letters to transcriptions.
Knowing that kids usually play but do not study……
Knowing that kids usually play but do not study, helps organize the appropriate environment for integration of a foreign language. It means that you should also be ready to play with them. Sometimes there might be a feeling that you are stamping on one place or going round in circles. It is just a feeling, but if you stick to the game way of teaching, surprisingly, and very soon you will see the fruits of your work.
The bottom line.
Answering the question of why it is worth introducing kids to a foreign language, I can say that from an early age kids are getting used to switching languages and educational routines. Secondly, they easily engage in the discovery of something new. Moreover, while teaching kids, you can also become a kid for a short time, which is a great experience as well.
Enjoy your coffee!
